For 200 years, Marceline Abadeer has been grieving over the demise of her relationship with ex girlfriend Bonnibel Bubblegum. Plagued with nightmares, regret and obvious heartbreak, Marceline remains in solitary confinement in the solemnity of her house until her friendly apple supplying neighbor Tree Trunks informs her of a young heroic boy named Finn who has become the talk of Ooo since saving a small village in the Candy Kingdom. Tree Trunks' story makes no valiant effort in convincing Marceline to expose herself to the world until, in the midst of her personal newscast, the vampire queen hears that her former father figure, the Ice King, has rendered notorious for kidnapping Princess Bubblegum. Intrigued, Marceline follows Tree Trunks to a renewed version of Ooo, and eventually meets this teenage hero who seems to be surprisingly attentive, understanding, and informed.
Finn quickly brings out the fun in Marceline and she begins to learn to look past the longing in her heart until she is invited to the Candy Kingdom with Finn and his magically elastic dog Jake where Marceline catches a glimpse of her former lover for the first time in 213 years and the emotions come flooding back, stronger than ever and suddenly the vampire queen is slung back into the the downward spiraling grief she has grown to be familiar with.
Through Finn, Marceline makes small, steady interactions with the princess but after a faithful night of conveying her feelings in a song and an unexpected turn of events where she finds out that Bonnibel's most valued possession is a tee shirt she was given by Marceline, the feelings Marceline shared for Princess Bubblegum are renewed and vampire queen is once again torn through the complexity of her emotions. Will the old couple's love be renewed or will Princess Bubblegum leave Marceline's heart in shambles yet again? Stakes to the heart are the best way to kill a vampire after all...
