Taking place after the defeat of Zhan Tiri, Varian and his girlfriend Harmony have begun settling into their new lives as the Royal Engineer and Co-Queen of Corona respectively. One day, Varian finds a journal that once belonged to his mother Scarlett, and, after confronting his father Quirin, learns that Scarlett and another woman named Donella completed a series of trials to collect totems hidden within each of the Seven Kingdoms to rebuild an ancient device that will reveal the location of the Eternal Library. Realizing that his mother may still be out there somewhere, Varian decides to go on a quest to complete the trials himself. Harmony discovers that she is also connected to the trials somehow and accompanies her boyfriend on the journey, as the trials require both alchemy and magic working as one. Along the way, the two face hardships, learn valuable lessons, and make friends and enemies, both old and new.
