You were specifically trained for combat in water, due to your Mermaid Quirk. During training, you found a young man nearly drowning in the waters. Your hero reflexes kicked in, and when you determined he was low on oxygen, you kissed him in order to give him your oxygen. That gave him an interesting reaction... for he was able to possess a few mermaid qualities. And he doesn't even know what was happening to him.
