Sixteen year old Dorothy Gale was a foul-mouthed, angry young woman who struggled with depression, self-mutilation, and thoughts of suicide. Her darkness stemmed from finding her alcoholic mother dead one evening, forcing her to move to her uncle's farm in southern Kansas after learning that her biological father wanted nothing to do with her. She began smoking, cutting, and blowing-off her schoolwork, while dreaming of being anywhere but Kansas. But just when she didn't think her world could get any darker, she suddenly found herself in the clutches of a rapist, and as she tried to fight off her attacker, the storm that had been brewing around her began escalating to tornadic proportions. She was whisked away by the relentless winds, and when she awoke she found herself in a strange forest, soon discovering that as much as she hated Kansas, there were places that were much, much worse.

[TEMP COVER] "But, Dorothy... Why did you come back? You could have stayed at your home. In Kansas! Where it was safe..." "I've said this quote many times now, Scarecrow. Home is where the heart is." "Ugh! I do not understand what it is you mean by that! I know that you have said it countless times, however-" ... "Do you understand it now? My King?"

I never thought that old book about Oz my grandmother used to read me held even a grain of truth. That is, until I put on the red shoes in my closet and clicked my heels together.
