Because he was a good friend. Paul had already been beat up enough at his last school simply for looking like a "fag." When he ends up with a crush on John he tries to find out how he will get the boy for his own while avoiding coming out to his family and friends, while John, Stu, and Pete try to find dates for the senior dance.

Everything John has experienced with Paul, from their meeting to their first kiss to their devastating split is written in this bedtime story, one that John might never be brave enough to tell Sean.
