We are taken into the story of a young girl from the Eastern Cape raised in a family of domestic violence with her father as a mine worker and her mother as a teacher . Her sisters and friends are also a predicament of abuse and violence from their respective partners . She moves to Johannesburg and encounters a Ghanaian organ trafficker in Hillbrow who she mistakenly falls pregnant for while in a lesbian relationship in the early 2000s. Her defence from affection lead her to being a perpetrator of abuse and violence.

A woman writes letters to her daughter , Kambili, a product of defilement and forced marriage. Reflecting on her life as a young lady who lived in poverty - married off at a young age to the arms of an abusive business man
