O que muitos não sabiam era que Lucerys e Aegon viviam um romance escondido a muito anos, mesmo Aegon sendo noivo do irmão mais velho de Lucerys, os dois se entregaram a paixão e não se importavam com nada além disso. Então quando a Usurpação aconteceu Lucerys não pensou duas vezes e apoiou Aegon, que além de seu tio era seu amante, e assim traiu sua mãe e seu irmão, mas a traição contra Rhaenyra ia muito além do amor que ele sentia por Aegon, havia algo por trás de tanto rancor que o Velaryon guardava e sentia pela a mãe. Toda a verdade por trás do ódio de Lucerys pela a própria mãe veio átona durante a dança dos dragões, onde Lucerys ficou conhecido como o terror dos negros. Lucerys lutaria até o último segundo para manter Aegon no trono de ferro.
