The MacKittrick's of Woodbury, England were a very close family of loving parents and children, unusual for their time and for their station in life. And their little boy Mac knew that he would have a lifelong friend in his 8 years older brother Dart, as Mac nicknamed his brother when Mac was just learning to speak as a toddler. Because, his brother's given name of Dartmouth--from their paternal mother's family name--was too much of a mouthful for the little 2 year old Mac to say. Yet sadly later at the tender age of 8 years old, Lord Pendleton MacKittrick, Mac, found himself a brotherless and parentless orphan after his parents and brother were waylaid by highwaymen who stole their money, jewelry, and possessions, as his parents were returning their older son to Eton for his final year before university-and then they and their carriage driver were killed by the highwaymen. Their loss was a devastating blow to the very young Mac. Now an adult of 30 years, his life is a solitary one, and he is somewhat poignantly known as the Lonesome Lord by marriage minded noble Mamas who seek to suggest their daughters as helpmate wives for him. And though Lord Mac has graciously met these charming and worthy daughters of the ton, he does not feel a connection to them. His own grief is so ever present, that he has yet to find someone who truly understands his loss. And yet, Lord Mac will meet a lovely young lady who understands and shares his loss, if he will only open himself to the possibility of forming an attachment with her. To be continued with the Prologue and Ch. 01

What if a work of fiction wasn't fiction at all? What if we only thought it was fiction because it was written down, and we were separated from it by the page? Isabel Darrow, troubled by her past and feeling disconnected from the world, likes her doctor's suggestion that the world of fiction might become reality. She likes the idea of waking up in the middle of her favourite book with the handsome, brooding Mr Thornton glaring at people in his mill yard, but she doesn't worry about the foul air of dirty, smoky Milton, because it's not real, and it was written over 160 years ago. But then she takes a trip to Oxford, and gets waylaid along the way, finding herself greeted at a smoky train station, by a man called Mr Hale, who claims to be her godfather. When Isabel meets Margaret and first sees Mr Thornton, she's determined to help the course of love run a little more smoothly for the two stubborn lovers. But Gaskell hadn't accounted for a second young lady in the Crampton house, and whilst Isabel tries to adapt to a life where women have no independence or equality, Milton must adapt to her. The question is, will Mr Thornton adapt to her, or Margaret, first?

This is a continuation of the story of North and South, many years after the last meeting between Margaret and John. In 1854, Margaret was living with her aunt and cousin in London after the death of her father earlier in the year. John Thornton comes to dinner at Harley Street as a guest of Henry Lennox, and Margaret hears of his failed business. With Henry's assistance, Margaret comes up with a scheme to loan Thornton the money to restart his mill. In this story, Margaret does not keep the appointment with Thornton, flees to Spain, and leaves it to Henry to tell Thornton about the loan. It is now 1862 and Margaret must return to England, to start over again once more. Although the BBC adaptation of North and South is a favorite, this story is based on Mrs. Gaskell's novel, which did not end at a train station, it ended in a London parlor, much the same way the book began. Apologies for not having a train scene; however, inferences to actor Richard Armitage as John Thornton are simply unavoidable.

A short one shot and continuation of the story by Elizabeth Gaskell. This is my first time writing fanfiction after years of reading it. I might continue writing this story since I'm very interested in what M and J's life in Miton will be like :)
