Katniss ist mit Haymitch nach Distrikt 12 zurück gekommen. Sie verfällt oft in Depressionen und hört auf zu leben bis er auftaucht: Peeta Mellark! Der Junge mit dem Brot der sie so oft gerettet hat, ihr immer zur Seite stand und der wegen ihr eingewebt wurde. Doch auch er hat noch mit seinen Erinnerungen zu kämpfen und hat seine Anfälle immer noch nicht richtig unter Kontrolle. Als dann auch noch Gale auftaucht und die letzten Hungerspiele stattfinden wird Katniss allmählich klar das sie wieder eine Figur in einem noch perfideren Spiel geworden ist...

Er sammelte Zeitungsausschnitte von seinen Morden. Er war begeistert von der Denkweise des dunklen Lords. Er schloss sich ihm an und war ein stolzer Todesser. Er gehorchte ihm über alles hinweg. Auch als der dunkle Lord von seinen Todessern ein Hauselfen forderte, stellte Regulus ihm seinen Hauselfen Kreacher stolz zur Verfügung. Er sah es als Ehre an das Kreacher dem dunklen Lord dienen durfte, obwohl der dunkle Lord eigentlich Abscheu gegenüber diesen Kreaturen empfand.
