Harry Potter was a safe haven for many minority and LGBTQIA+ communities, the fact that JK Rowling has so grievously violated the trust of these communities is disgusting and so far beyond vile. As I've gotten older I've begun recognizing the racist, sexist, homophobic, antisemitic, and transphobic themes that permeate the Harry Potter series. That said, I still adore Harry Potter and I do not begrudge anyone who will continue to enjoy the franchise and all fan-creations associated with it. All my life I thought Harry Potter was a children's book series and Harry was a brave guy with a scar and Dumbledore was a complicated person and Hermione was a know-it-all and Draco didn't have a choice and Ron was our king and Voldemort was a bald, noseless guy hungry for power. I didn't know that somewhere in the universe, alongside normal muggle life, it was actually happening. So naturally when Rubeus Hagrid hands me my letter of Third year, my reply was, "Are you kidding me?" But he was not.
