Principles on how to write powerful poetic passages, with explanations of how and why these rules work. I'm not saying I write great poetry by any means, but I do take pride in it. I've read on poetry in a few places, but Edgar Allan Poe's "The Poetic Principle" was the best; most of the following tips are based on that work. If you can, however, you should read the original, even though it can be a bit difficult to understand at times. Here, I've distilled the main points in modernized language. Enjoy!

This book contains a couple of sonnets of mine. One is meta - a sonnet about sonnets. The other is an example that I will show through eight drafts of how it was composed. This illustrates my method for writing poetry. There are lots of other methods, but here you get to see one of my pieces through various iterations until I get to what I think is "finished". Maybe this will help you in your writing, or maybe it will be purely for our amusement. Either way, feel free to comment on what you see in the process.
