Isabella Washington lives in southern Pennsylvania with her family. Her father, the brother of General George Washington, owns an impressive farm that could greatly aid the Continental Army. When the General goes to persuade his brother to donate some of his grain to the army, he benefits more than he will ever know. His brilliant niece, Isabella, offers her help in the war for independence. She travels back to the camp where she becomes a nurse, an inventor, and a spy for the Culper Spy Ring. What happens when she meets Major Benjamin Tallmadge, a man as intelligent as he is handsome. The two quickly become friends and bond over their many shared interests. But what will happen when the damned redcoats interfere?

Mercy Strong, the younger sister of Selah Strong, grew up with Benjamin Tallmadge, the two were practically inseparable. Benjamin runs off to join the Continental Army, leaving Mercy heartbroken. With Ben's absence, Mercy's father arranges for her to marry Silas Grove, a local patriot. Upon hearing this arrangement, Ben returns, all done up in blue and gold.
