[1ST PLACE WINNER, BEST OPENING, AND BEST PROTAGONIST OF THE CREATOR'S CHOICE AWARDS 2020] In a world of gods and aliens falling to the Earth from the sky, Kennedy Jacobson was simply an agent of SHIELD - one of the best Nick Fury could find. Throughout her years of work, she rose through the ranks, becoming one of the most esteemed agents SHIELD had to offer. But Kennedy had a secret that lied in her past: one that brought her to the States in the first place, and one she was desperate to hide. When Kennedy is tasked with recruiting Captain America as a part of SHIELD, she begins to question everything about the life and the job she thought she once understood. As friendships are put to the test and trust is broken, Kennedy must find out who she is underneath the layers of secrecy and decide whether her voice is truly something worth sacrificing. • • • PG-13 SLOWBURN + ANGST, SOME VIOLENCE [end of avengers - avengers endgame] Started: 08/2019 Published: 29/07/2020 Finished: 10K Reads: 25/05/2021 ↳1st Place Winner for TCCA 2020 ↳Best Opening Award for TCCA 2020 ↳Best Protagonist Award for TCCA 2020 Best Rankings #1-freethepoc #1-tws #2-steverogersfanfiction #12-civilwar #14-blackwoman #57-avengers #60-action-adventure ©midnightcafes 2020

[Featured in FreetheLGBT: Diverse Literature reading list and Humor: Young. Dumb. Full of Fun list] Colin Mitchell, a photographer at a well-known store, Snapshot, is openly gay--mostly. His ideal experiences are sexcapades that are always subtle, never out of line and straight to the point. (Ironic, isn't it?) However, he meets Peter Chu: a snarky Chinese student with a loud mouth and more issues than Vogue. His intriguing persona has Colin enraptured and willing to throw away his CADBMBB- 'Clients Aren't Dated, But May Be Banged' principle--and take things further than they've ever gone with any guy. Circumstances push both their lives together, with Peter seeking to find his own path after a bad break up and a significant move. Colin is willing to walk that blazed trail with him--in more ways than one. But there is one problem... Peter is as straight as they come. ~ Das' long stride forced me to trail behind as he walked out of the ostentatious restaurant and to the parking lot. " All you had to do was sit and eat, maybe nod politely at the odd phrase, that's it Amaras" His piercing words and harsh tone, were gritted out through a clenched jaw. I'd never seen him this upset before but I couldn't help my own hackles raising at the accusatory words. " Because standing by and watching as someone I care about is insulted is the norm for a family dinner." I attempted to flick my hair out of my eyes as I said my piece. A cold gaze cut back towards me, Das' frown twisting his face into something harsh and dangerous as he glanced back to meet my eyes. "They're family, you of all people should understand that."~ Amaras stopped seeing herself as something worthy of love a long time. All she wants to do is enjoy the time spent away from her tumultuous home life, and maybe embarrass herself a little less every time she speaks to a stranger. Das is tired. So fucking tired of being alone and unaccepted by the only family he's ever known. Each day feels more and more unbearable as he struggles to prove himself. Meanwhile the constricting vines and sharp thorns of his own family history seem ready to devour him whole. Amaras and Das may not be looking for each other but circumstances force them together time and time again. Both have jagged edges and painful scars. It's just a matter of who walks away, while the other bleeds out.
