Вместе с ним, в пансионе проживает и молодой Растиньяк, который по воле судьбы узнает трагичную судьбу Горио. Оказывается, он был мелким торговцем, сколотившим огромное состояние, но растратившим его на обожаемых дочерей (Растиньяк становится любовником одной из них), а те в свою очередь, выжав из отца все, что могли, бросили его. И дело было не в знатных и богатых зятьях, а в самих дочерях, которые, попав в высшее общество, начали стесняться своего отца. Даже когда Горио умирал, дочери не соизволили прийти и помочь отцу. Они не появились и на похоронах. Эта история стала толчком для молодого Растиньяка, который решил во что бы то ни стало покорить Париж и его обитателей.
