She saw the panic in her eyes and made a split-second decision that would undoubtedly change her life. "I volunteer!" The square was quiet then, the disgruntled murmurs halted. "I volunteer as tribute!" she shouted and for the first time in her entire eighteen years of life all eyes were on her, Jaydah Mellark, as she stood in the pathway before the Peacekeepers ready to remove her from the square.
In another world, Katniss Everdeen might have volunteered for young Primrose, but the baker's daughter beat her to it. Jaydah might have stood a chance against the other tributes, too, had her brother's name not been drawn and all reservations for her own life were thrown out the window.
