After all of their adventures, the crew of House Louisville was ready to sit back and take it easy for a while. But a surprise visitor informed them they owed millions of pearls to the Bank. He was willing to take them all as indentured servants for the Bank and let them work decades to pay off their debt. That would mean splitting up the House, though, and nobody was willing to let that happen. To save the House, and to stay together, Jason and Annabeth find themselves in a tournament they must win. Because one thing is for sure, the Bank don't play around.

The Gathering only lasted for seven days, but it ended up being a lot more of an adventure than Jason had expected. Now it's time to head home, and Jason is excited to sleep in his own bed and hang out with John, Tyler, and Annabeth again. Jason learned a lot, and he's eager to put that knowledge to use. If his ideas work, it could totally revolutionize how Sandy and the crew make charms-allowing them to heal, train, and defend the House even better than before. So when the rotten mages show up, Jason is still feeling confident in himself and his new knowledge. He has a new shield. He's fought for his life in the arena. His matrix is much denser than before. He's a warrior mage now and stronger than ever before. What could possibly go wrong?

After getting punched in the face by a golem, Jason discovers he desperately needs two things: a much better offense and a much better defense. To a hammer, everything looks like a nail, and to a mage, everything is solved with magic. That is, unless your magic is small and restricted like Jason's. Since he can't use charms, create shields or throw fireballs, he needs to find a different way to win battles. Fortunately, Tyler is back, and as a Natural, he is ready to teach Jason the Way of the Fist. Among other things. (Nudge nudge, wink wink) And he'll need all the help he can get, because with Isobel gone, the Louisville Mages are in disarray. That should have been the end of the threat to Jason, his friends, and the House. But she left behind a terrible legacy, and now there is a battle royale for power. As the last person standing, Jason must find a way to defend the House and get his friends back on their feet. If he can't do it with magic, then he'll have to do it as a fighter. He will have to become the Melee Mage.

Never stop a golem's fist with your face. Jason learned that lesson the hard way. Having survived his "Death Experience" that awoke his Magic, Jason discovers a whole new world - full of supernatural wonder - and ruthless cruelty. He came to Louisville hoping for a new beginning and finds so much more - Magic, Acceptance, Friendship and (maybe) Love. Now he's in a mage war - part of a group of guardians trying to defend a strange and wonderful house. His friends are few, a battle mage, a mountain troll, a cheerful grandmother, a mysterious incubus, and a magical kitten. Magic is running low for the home team and the enemy mages are trying every trick in the book to bring down the shields. Jason will have to discover his affinities, what makes him special, before time runs out and Isobel, the mage eater, exacts her revenge. Note: Lots of magic in this book. Gay hero. There is physical violence. If you like "Harry Dresden" and the "Iron Druid" you will enjoy the "Fledgling God" in his first spellbinding novel of Magical Discovery and Mage War.
