Something fated doesn't have to feel that way at first. It doesn't have to strike like an arrow sinking into the red of a bullseye or a lightning bolt scorching the earth. It can be a moment where you look at someone and recognize there's something different, with a certainty like you've always known. The moment can fade, be naturally overcome by other things.
But it will return every time you look.
There's the tiniest hint of a romantic in me, a part that instinctively warms at the thought that there's a special, irreplaceable person that I'll be drawn towards. If someone like that existed, my first thought would be that he's human.
Life does have a way of messing with expectations.
