Mara never meant to become part of anyone else's war.
Taken from Earth by the Weavebreakers, she isn't kept alive out of mercy, and she isn't spared for negotiation. What happens to her is observation. It is research. Blood tests, tissue samples, DNA mapping, stress trials, skin, hair, saliva-every fragment of her cataloged like something that can be harvested. The Weavebreakers aren't chasing knowledge for curiosity's sake, they're chasing superiority. A breakaway faction convinced they're meant to become more than their own people, they take what they want, breed what they can, and break whatever survives long enough to be useful. Mara isn't a prisoner to them. She's material. Proof.
Then a Vigil ship locks onto the crippled craft.
Aesryn Threx Kal boards the vessel as protocol, eliminates its occupants with controlled finality, and finds what they were transporting: a human, alive, barely. He brings her aboard as Protected, a living continuity event that cannot be ignored, and what should have been a clean retrieval becomes something else entirely.
Mara recovers aboard a Xenoparan warship that doesn't sleep, only adapts. The ship learns her fear and her pain, reshaping itself around her survival until it becomes Vela, a presence that chooses to protect her alongside the Vigil who pulled her out.
Humans were never on the Xenoparan map. Earth wasn't a monitored world, not a known species, not a possibility-until Mara becomes first contact by accident. And once the Council understands what she is, everything shifts, because the galaxy doesn't just contain a new species. It contains a planet that might choose Xenoparans willingly.
The Convergence has already begun.
She was taken to be used. Now she's been chosen instead. And in a universe built on discipline, hierarchy, and survival, that choice may be the most disruptive force of all.
