Benjamin was found by Texas Ranger Hal Hartman when he was thirteen, after Mick abandon him. Benjamin was mostly alone in the asylum. The other inmates and staff didn't come close to him because everybody was terrified of him. But he wasn't completely alone. He managed to befriend two inmates in the asylum.
