Kusajishi Akina adalah anak dari Kusajishi Hiro dan Kusajishi Kikuno. Kikuno meninggal karena kanker, maka dari itu Hiro menikah lagi dengan wanita lain. Namun Akina tetap tidak mau mengakui wanita baru itu sebagai ibunya dan menetap di rumah lamanya yang bergaya jepang jaman dahulu. Ia menyelamatkan seorang laki-laki bernama Kaneki Ken. Semakin mengenal laki-laki tersebut, semakin berkembanglah rasa suka terhadapanya, begitu pun Kaneki terhadap Akina. Namun ketika mengetahui Kaneki seorang ghoul, Akina tidak mengurangi rasa sukanya, tetapi ia merasa menderita karena ayahnya-lah yang membantu proses membuat Kaneki menjadi ghoul.
