Harlem, New York, 1929. Kenneth Barker was an African American businessman, working a high position for a clothing company. Unfortunately for him, when the stock market crashed, so did his benefits, and his company was put out of business. This caused him to look for work elsewhere, which led him to the Cotton Club, a legendary nightspot in the Harlem district of New York City that for years featured prominent black entertainers who performed for white audiences. There he met Josephine Bailey, a twenty-five year old flapper, who worked as a dancer at the club. She was the only black woman who worked a dancer, despite the club being full of black entertainers. She was able to grant him a job, but she soon lost her own, due to racial conflict within her group. Kenneth did as well, due to guilt by association. The two began to skip town, looking for work and getting in all kinds of trouble. Each town they visited brought a new opportunity, as well as a new challenge. Will the two of them be able to overcome this Great Depression and flourish in America? Or will they find no luck, and be left to survive off of nothing but their love for each other and jazz music?

Aya Weathers is a hardworking, talented, aspiring songwriter who prefers to put her goals before her personal life. Christopher Brown is a stubborn, rude singer who has his guard up and doesn't plan to let anyone in. Together, the two of them will be prominent figures in music history. That's if they can get along first. "You're not gonna win any awards being rude, Christopher." Aya slumped back in her chair, taking a long sip of her black coffee. "It was doing me just fine before. And can you stop calling me that?" Chris shot his head up, resting it on his fist. "No, I'm good. Thank you for asking nicely though." She grinned before clicking her pen and jotting down something in her notebook. "Why you keep playing with me? It's not funny." "I'm not playing, Christopher. This is strictly business, not a game." Aya stared at him with grim, serious eyes. She meant what she was saying. "What if I wanted it to be a game?" "Is that a bet?" Aya tested with a heightened eyebrow. "Do you want to make it one?"

Sequel to Tough Love Christopher Brown was known to have it all. The money, the fame, even a beautiful family. Yet, there was something missing to this dream world he was living in. Aya Weathers was his fallen angel who had everything taken from her. She once was a part of Christopher's world, she shared what he had. Until one cruel man took every last ounce of that paradise right out of her hands. She stayed hidden, underground from the rest of the world. It was figured that she would be much safer there. She thought she could escape everything that way. But when the past she hasn't dealt with comes back for the last fight with her, what will she do? "I've just been running, and running, and running, and I'm tired, Chris!" Aya cried out hysterically, getting weak in the knees. She slumped down against the cold wall and allowed her body to drop down to the floor. "I'm tired." She whispered weakly. "Why won't you just let me go?" "Letting go was my first mistake. Doing it again would make me stupid." Chris touched her arm, her entire body tensing up. "You'd be stupid to keep me here." She shook her head and pushed his hand off of her arm. He took her chin into his index finger and thumb, picking up her head to face him. In her eyes, there was nothing but a shattered heart, a scared mind, and an empty soul. This wasn't the girl he fell in love with years ago. This wasn't the girl who gave him a beautiful son. This wasn't the one who got away. But he knew she was in there. And he'd do whatever it took to bring her back. "Then that's a risk I'm willing to take."
