The Dustbowl and tequila aren't likely to erase the regrets haunting the Fourth Horseman, but when annihilation is your sole purpose how can you find substance for your soul? "A provocative moral tale as much about embracing life as meeting Death." Sometimes prayers are best left unanswered. After the equivalence of centuries worth of service as Death, the former man is left wondering whether dying would have indeed been a more desirable option. The buzz of phasing in and out of temporal existence and lopping off heads only lasts so long. But when Death chooses to act on an event he recognizes as an "act of God," he discovers his calling to be more nobel than he thought. "Never has Death been so human as a kiddie pool, a folder chair and a bottle of regret. If only the other three horseman could be as easy to relate to."

Ashlynn Bailey, more commonly known as Ash, has a secret. It's a secret she must keep from everyone, no matter how great the temptation to tell someone. She's already considered something of a freak, what with her being an albino, and she doesn't need to get locked up in the loony bin on top of that. Her reputation is low enough as it is. See, Ash can see dead people. Everywhere she goes, she sees dead people. From soldiers who died fighting in World War Two, to a little girl who drowned in the park lake. From dead royalty, to dead dogs. Things are bad enough just seeing all these dead people - and then they start asking her for help. At first she tries to ignore all these desperate pleas for help, but then she sees Lake Palmer, a dead boy who used to go to her school, and something about him makes her agree to helping him catch his murderer. But the closer she comes to catching him...the more likely it seems that she'll end up alongside Lake - dead. She needs to catch the murderer before he catches her.
