Let me tell you about about a place, a mythical island. The ground is meant for much more than to step on, instead the land feels you. The lakes and rivers are also meant for more than for just bathing, its waters are used to caress you. Even the wind that blows on your skin is like a whisper. This land is alive for the very spirit of the island is in every rock, every drop of water, and each blade of grass. No one comes to the island by accident. On this island, the local beliefs and traditions may very well be viewed as taboo by modern society. However in this place nothing is taboo. Instead those that inhabit the island are free from the constraints of modern judgement. Those that live among the island are liberated from such notions of taboo. No fruit is forbidden. Those that come into the domain of the island are destined for the land to be their new home. This is the story of those that have been recently summoned. Though they have yet to realize their invitation as their ship, a pleasure cruise liner named the Serendipitous Voyage is making its way through the Mediterranean sea into an unpredicted storm. This is the story of those coming to the island and this is their story.

Natalie Abernathy was born into a world where the lines on your skin tell everyone who you are. They appear like tattoos and change with every choice you make, every person you meet. Her heart is broken by the loss of her best friend Cecil McCourt, who succumbed to The Sickness days before their shared fifteenth birthday. Her friends surround her, trying to fill the void left by Cecil. Time moved on, carrying Natalie along with it. Now it's three years later, everyone's senior year. Days before school starts, Natalie befriends the new boy in town, Union Davidson. Cecil (now known as Cyrus) is quick to warn her away from him.
