As soon as she had graduated, she was able to get a job as a doctor for S.H.I.E.L.D. Her father didn't know about her job, but he knew she was working as a doctor somewhere. Mercedes kept quite a bit from her father, one thing being her boyfriend. He didn't know of the man his daughter was in love with.
