The worst thing seventeen year old Phillip Gallanta had to worry about was learning to tame the uncontrollable power that lurked inside of him. But when his older brother Kevan, the King of Ateth, dies in a war against the nation of Chora, his mother starts planning his coronation and he realizes that his powers are the last thing he has to worry about. Despite being completely unprepared for the role, he vows, for his brother, that he'd be a good king and make him proud.
But that promise is a hard one to keep when he finds it hard to control himself, let alone an entire country and lead it through the worst war in Ateth's history. And his growing feelings for his advisor's daughter didn't help him in the slightest, considering he was to wed another girl.
So, yeah, maybe his worries hadn't been that bad before after all.
