Giyuu feared being a lone but he feared the pain of losing one close to him again so he distanced himself from his fellow hashiras, for that very reason as well as the facts that he knew his time was short (so he didn't want anyone to care about him), and that he didn't deserve to be a hashira it should've been Sabito.
