You stop pretending because you're convinced that no one is paying any attention to you. You sit there, in the dark, and you smile to yourself because you think no one can see. I saw. au fan fiction where Monty and Winston meet over the summer - "I love it here," Winston sighs and I move to lay down next to him. "Give it a week and you'll be sick of everything," I tell him. Seeing the same people, the same five shops, the same everything for your whole life isn't fun. I wonder how much longer he's going to be able to stand this before he wants to go back home. "I'm serious," Winston says. "I really like it here. It's so different to the city." "What's the city like?" I think William said they live in California or some shit. Our town is nothing compared to California, he can't be serious. He shrugs and he keeps staring up at the sky. It's maybe three in the morning now but the sky is still dark. "Busy. Loud." Winston says and then he sighs. "Boring. I mean, we don't even have fucking stars there. All the lights and everything, they make it impossible to see the stars." California is boring? Are we talking about the same California? But I don't feel like questing him, I'm too tired to. "Yeah, I guess the stars are pretty." He smiles and we stay there staring up at the stars. Soon the sun will be up and they'll be gone again.

ALTERNATE ENDING TO 13REASONS WHY In this story, Monty meets Winston earlier in his life. This prevents Monty from committing such violent and harmful acts, instead he learns how to love and feel. Winston guides Monty to a better future, a future they could share together. It's a beautiful romance, showing acceptance and growth but also pain and regret. A love story that could have been. Winston could've saved Monty, he just walked into his life too late... but not in this story. Completed!

Monty and Winston met and fell in love back home in California. They had to face serious obstacles there, but not even Monty's violent and homophobic father could keep them apart. They left their hometown and their families behind to start their new lives in the college town of Ann Arbor, where they go to The University of Michigan. After Monty came out to everyone at high school prom, they thought they were done hiding their relationship. But there is prejudice and bigotry everywhere, and just when Monty thought he had it all, everything got extremely complicated. Is their relationship strong enough to survive this? ------ This short story is a continuation of my longer fanfiction "The Good Side of You" in which I tell Monty and Winston's story from the moment they met.
