Throughout the series, he got plenty of chances to love someone else and discover what Rachel really meant to him, but Rachel never really got that same opportunity. There was no space between them as every part of their bodies touched each other's. They both laughed at how they wanted the other one to make more room when the poor piece of furniture did not have any left.
