This is a spinoff of the original Goblin's Trilogy. In the aftermath of Matilda's death, the new goblin queen, her granddaughter Hella, is left with the overwelming task of meeting her own expectations. Struggling with grief and the feeling that she is failing to match her grandmother's greatness, she commits the worst sin a goblin ever could in the Underground. She shows weakness. Odd's son, Fenrir, and his siblings are quick to snap at her bared throat and rip everything Hella has ever loved and wanted from her. Only six months into her queenship, Hella is left with nothing. She flees the Underground in shame, seeking the refuge of the Autumn branches with her two lovers, the elf Lias, and Snorri's daughter, Kara, at her heels. However, in the Autumn Branches, she does not find the peace she wanted, but a creature with a terrible power filling the void Athane's death left behind as the god of memory. The young god offers to let Hella wade through the river of time to stop her cousins from tearing apart the empire, but this bargain will carry a great and deadly price. A price that will pit her against the very grandmother she idolized.
