When Tom Riddle went to Godric's Hollow that night, he did not intend to kill anyone. What he intended was to show the Potters the truth, that Vivian Jamie Lilith Potter was his true soulmate, and Dumbledore was lying to them.
In both the magical and mundane worlds, there are soulmarks that a person gains anytime from birth until the age of 17. A mark would someday form somewhere on a person's body that represented their soulmate. One only ever has one mark, as far as history has been recorded. Until a certain violet-eyed girl but we will get to that later.
When Tom thought he was finally out of Dumbledore's grasp, he went to Gringotts and did a blood and inheritance test. It showed his relation to Salazar Slytherin, his right to the Slytherin Lordship, and also confirmed that the black and white Phoenix soulmark he had had since he was born meant he would one day have a soulmate. Later, though increased testing, he found his female soulmate would be born at a much later time.
Since then, he worked to make sure his soulmate would be raised in a better world than he was while trying to find a way for him to not be terribly older than her physically. He did this with as little violence as possible. But, accidents happened, and he used that accident to create a Horcrux. He trained the Basilisk to look for/sense a magical core that matched his and to protect her at all costs. His only thoughts were of protecting her, loving her, and making the wizarding world a better place. But Dumbledore found out about his soulmate and his plans and did his best to stop him.
