This was very new territory for me. I had had almost no physical contact with any boy in my entire life with the exception of my dad and Charlie and only that one time when I fell asleep on Finn’s shoulder. Now, there I was sitting on his lap like I owned the spot.
“I came here so that I could spend some time with you, outside of school. Be with you when you let your guard down around me for more than a second,” he whispered into my ear as my back was still turned to him.
I really, really wanted to look at his face but I didn’t know what I would see there; a drunk teen or the Finn I knew?
Hanging out with him out of school meant that I was more than aware on the slight crush I had developed on him. But seeing him tonight, in his boots and his stunning smile was making me realize that it was possible that I even, kind of liked him, in that way.
“But you haven’t, have you?” I said.
I was on his lap. I was on his lap and I could feel a little something that wasn’t there before pulling at my heartstrings. I shifted a little so that I was sitting sideways, half looking at him, and half out at the pool and the little scene that was playing out there involving floating plastic cups.
I didn’t know what was going on in that moment between us but I was willing to make the best of it.
