En los momentos finales del planeta Vegeta, Bardock y Gine envían a su hijo Kakarotto en una cápsula espacial para salvarlo de la inminente destrucción causada por Freezer. La nave viaja por el espacio y termina estrellándose en Konoha justo en medio del ataque del Zorro de Nueve Colas. Mientras Minato Namikaze y los ninjas intentan defender la aldea, Kakarotto, al ver la luna llena, se transforma en un gigantesco Ozaru, desatando el caos y enfrentándose a Kurama en una batalla titánica que destruye aún más la aldea. Minato, dándose cuenta del peligro, logra cortar la cola del Ozaru, haciendo que Kakarotto vuelva a su forma normal e inconsciente. Al final, Minato y Kushina sacrifican sus vidas para sellar a Kurama en su hijo, Naruto Uzumaki. Así, tanto Naruto como Kakarotto quedan huérfanos y son vistos con recelo por la aldea.
