In the present, Katya attends a wedding that stirs up many feelings she thought were dead and gone. In the past, she's a dumb teenager who's giving in to her heart despite how dangerous it may be. Trixie and Katya are psychologically damaged teenagers who have trouble opening up to people. To solve that problem, their school counselors decide that they need a friend who understands them.

1976: Trixie is a housewife that lives in Moundsvils, a small town in the middle of Wisconsin. Her life takes a turn when she meets the new eccentric woman in town. Katya is a writer of paranormal and horror books. She's looking for a change in her career and personal life, leaving New York behind. She ends up in a rural town, to start her next work. 1968: Trixie moves from the Midwest to the suburbs of Boston, thanks to her aunt Nina. She meets her russian neighbor who has immigrated from the USSR. They become close friends but there's something that Trixie can't quite put a finger on...

After graduating from Highschool Trixie feels like her life is falling apart. Katya is back in rehab, her grandmother's health is deteriorating, all while being on her own for the first time.
