Winter, 1917. Dorothy never really thought that war would take her older brother, but like so many others before him, Ian enlisted and departed Canada in khaki, leaving Dorothy to care for the youngest Gaston, Charlie. The return of her employer's son eats away at Dorothy: why should he, the rich man's son, the spoiled brat, be back home sleeping in his bed while her brother sleeps in the muck somewhere in France or Belgium? Robbie Monroe isn't the brat who ran off for a great adventure. Nearly deaf in one ear and deeply lonely, he is a man struggling to put his life back together after his time "over there," and Dorothy seems to be the only one he can talk to. She doesn't want to trust him but she can't help it, and Dorothy soon finds herself with something she didn't realize she desperately needed: a friend. Before the war's end, fate has one final reminder for Dorothy that happy endings don't always happen in real life, no matter how much she tells herself they can. Set in in the weeks before the 1917 Halifax Explosion, Shadows May Fall is a non-traditional World War I romance.

***Unedited*** A companion story to my novel Shadows May Fall. *Folks who have been reading along - you may have noticed that some of the parts have been unpublished (the ones set in 1904 and 1908.) The reason for this is that while I really enjoyed delving into the past with these characters and fleshing out Daniel and Lillian, they weren't really adding anything and coming up with a third one to fill the gap was just that -- filling the gap. I'll post them over at my website once this story is complete.

As Lord Adam Beresford left Ashwood, Hertfordshire for the training and education of a gentleman, he promised to return and marry his childhood best friend, and the only girl he could see himself marrying, Grace Denham. Neither of them foresaw that it would be twelve years until they would meet again. A lot has changed in that time, and their lives are vastly different. Adam became a gentleman, and everything that the heir to a Dukedom ought to be. Grace remained in Ashwood and became a housemaid to support her family. But as their lives intertwine once more, their childhood promise bubbles to the surface, throwing their lives, the lives of their families, and the village of Ashwood into chaos.

During World War I, Captain Everett Monterose, a disillusioned schoolteacher with a haunted past from Malad, Idaho, wants a chance at happiness instead of continually being dished out of misery. But after he's severely wounded and temporarily blinded in battle, he's shipped back to America. He faces living the rest of his life crippled - until he meets Elyria Ormond, a blind woman volunteering at Walter Reed Army Hospital in Washington DC, offering compassion to soldiers on their deathbeds. Suddenly, their lives are forever changed, and dreams of true love they'd long since given up on are within reach. But Everett soon learns happiness is not a commodity to barter for with good deeds, and there is no escape from the many forms of misery.

France, 1937. It only takes a single snowstorm for Lina Fontaine's family to fall apart. When an accident in the snow kills her brother and renders her speechless, Lina and her family move to Marseilles, France in order to escape the painful memories. Disillusioned and disgusted with her new reality, Lina yearns to hide away from the world. Yet when her father abandons them and threatens to take her beloved sister with him, Lina realizes she can no longer ignore her own struggles. It is only when Lina meets Luka Fuhrmann, a German-Jewish pianist with a mysterious past, that she begins to have hope again. At the same bookstore she encounters him, she receives a book with a letter tucked between the pages, written by a father pleading for help to find his missing daughter. When she learns there is a monetary reward, Lina realizes this may be the key to saving her own family. Yet as Lina becomes obsessed with finding the missing girl and spends more and more time with Luka, she finds her frequent absences may only be destroying her crumbling family further. And when Lina's plan ends up endangering her sister as well as Luka, Lina is forced to decipher what is most important: her family, the boy she loves, or her own desires.
