His head tipped back to rest against the top of the headboard and he sighed. "You ever do something you really regret Belle?"
The sudden question surprised her and she looked across at him curiously.
"Like what?" she asked. He sighed again.
"Like hurt someone you really liked, let them think you didn't care."
"I don't think so," she said faintly and his mouth set in a hard line, his fists briefly clenching.
"No, I guess most people wouldn't have. The rest of this has gone too cold. Can you take it away? I'm gonna go to sleep for a bit I think. Suddenly gone real tired." He sounded despondent and as she took his cup from him he struggled to lie down. Quickly she placed the cup on the side and went to help him get comfortable, moving his pillows and adjusting his sheets. It was hard to tell with his eyes covered if he was genuinely going to sleep or if he just wanted to be alone, but either way Isabelle took the cup and left him with his own company, her mind analysing everything he had said, as a hot flush spread through her and she wondered once again just how he would react when he knew for definite who she was.
Bret did something terrible that he never stopped regretting when he was a schoolboy. As a man the girl he wronged is thrust right in front of him again when he is weak and vulnerable. But as they both navigate the complicated feelings they have for one another a terrible incident causes everything to change.
