𝘾𝙝𝙞𝙘𝙖𝙜𝙤, 𝟭𝟵𝟭𝟴.
The city is choking on Spanish flu; at the hospital, Mary Masen is suffocating under a different fever. A nurse in Dr. Carlisle Cullen's ward, she spends her nights wiping other people's blood and holding her breath every time his golden eyes fall on her. Too clever, too alone, she dreams of studying medicine and settles instead for being a shadow at his bedside.
When her brother Edward "recovers" too quickly, too perfectly, Mary calls it a miracle. Carlisle knows his science cannot bear the daylight. Jasper Whitlock, a soldier back from the front, arrives to recruit among the dying and finds in Mary what he should never have crossed: his sharpest temptation, a scent of prayer and damnation.
Under the same roof, a doctor who is no longer entirely a man, a nurse who loves him in silence, a starving soldier and a brother who asks the wrong questions form a family no pastor would bless. Mary does not yet know the word vampire. She only knows that Carlisle's promises steal her breath, that Jasper's gaze burns hotter than any fever... and that if God is still watching Chicago, He is letting them sort this out on their own.
