Stanley is treating the bucket like a person. The Narrator is confused as to why Stanley can't just talk to him if he wants someone to talk to. Stanley starts going along as normal when he realised the narrator couldn't be heard by his co-worker. As Stanley goes about the time he talks to the narrator,despite being a different world the narrator still knows Stanley hasn't changed.
