He had been a rather formidable wizard and often reminded people as to why he was the chosen one and why people were scared shitless of him, even though he was on the light side of the war. Then of course, the so-called potter lick struck when he died. Turns out the deities love him (he'd never of guessed with how much of a bitch fate had been to him in his life) and claim him as their master, leading him to be ridiculously overpowered.
