As a 5th year at Hogwarts, Juniper Joy's advanced understanding of potions made her a prominent figure as a potion practitioner. Her study of the potion Maker/Taker relationship began during an unexpected discovery. She first noticed the results while sharing her giggle brew with her new friends. While they were stuck in mild giggling fits, her best friend was toppled over on the floor, stuck in hysterics that led to him being placed in the hospital wing. This event marked the beginning of Joy's Potion Maker/Taker Relationship discovery; for some, the link between how the strength of the potion is affected by the relationship of the potion maker and the intended potion taker. Although Juniper's research had the potential to expand the wizarding world's understanding of potions, her revolutionary research was overshadowed by her inability to produce charms. Unable to be taken seriously throughout her career, Juniper's luck changed in her mid-twenties when she landed an apprenticeship under Severus Snape. With Snape's reputation and Joy's Potions discovery, the wizarding world began to take notice. If the pair could prove Joy's theory by producing a cure for a complex magical disease, they could potentially end the suffering of hundreds of afflicted witches and wizards. Conducting this research was uncharted territory. To carry out research properly, Juniper needed to cultivate a bond from scratch and keep a record of each day's results. A unique and complicated scenario, but if the theory was proven, it would pave the way for many lives to be saved. Albus Dumbledore understood this clearly and made the arrangements. He found a participant for Snape and Joy's Potions research and was able to fill his vacant Defense Against the Dark Arts Professor position in one in one fell swoop! Juniper and Snape were instructed to spend every month leading up to the 1993 fall term conducting elixir research on a specific magic disease. Lycanthropy.
