A novel of the last days of the greatest port in the world. In 1509, a young Portuguese factor named Rui de Araújo sails into the harbour of Melaka and finds something he has no words for, a city of a hundred thousand souls, eighty-four languages, and a commercial civilization more sophisticated than anything in Europe. He has six weeks to love it before he is taken prisoner. He will spend two years learning it from the inside of a cell, writing intelligence reports in Latin on scraps of cloth, helping plan the destruction of the place he came to admire most. Tun Fatimah is eighteen, the daughter of Melaka's great chief minister, educated beyond what her world thinks women require. She watches the Portuguese ships arrive from the gallery of her father's house and reads them as a problem to be understood. When the Sultan murders her father on a false accusation and takes her as a royal consort, she does what her father taught her: she pays attention. She maps the court's collapse from inside it. They never truly meet. They are shaped by the same catastrophe from opposite sides of the same wall. The Fall of Melaka tells the story of how a civilization destroys itself, not from the outside alone, but through the specific, human failures of pride, fear, and bad faith, and what survives the wreckage when the trade routes simply find another harbour and the world moves on.
