Melody Burns will never get over the pain of abandonment. Sure, she has four siblings and a loving mother, but a father doesn't disappear without explanation. When Melody was a young child of fourteen her father left on a ship and never looked back or so the young girl thinks. After that moment she swears off any type of love and problem with loyalty. So when one day her father shows up on the porch two years later she doesn't know what to do she has sworn him off forever, but that's kind of hard when the rest of the family excepts him with open arms. When tragedy strikes others around them on their beloved island of Martha's Vineyard Melody must learn that a grudge can cost the higest bitter.

Electa is a normal girl. She loves the water, but she is forbidden to ever go sailing. In 1736, women aren't allowed to go sailing because it's considered "bad luck". Electa has been gazing into the water for so long, and she's tired of wondering what's out there. Little does she know that she'll soon know it better than anyone else.
