Theresa Belmont, also known as Tessa, was once a member of the noble family Belmont, who came from the city of Covent. She ran away because her family tried to convince her that becoming a musician was not suitable for a young woman of noble birth. They believed that she should better elegant, erudite, and, above all, obedient. Zachary von Ignis, or Zack, comes from a noble family that lives in the neighboring city. When his family's fortune was lost, he decided to go to war to restore the family's previous status. One rainy evening, while in Covent Garden, Zack heard a street musician's performance. Her music sounded so sad and poignant that it seemed to be in harmony with the anger and frustration in his heart. "We share the same feelings, Miss. Could you play another song for me?" Before he was the compassionate doctor and father of the Cullen family, Carlisle Cullen was a young man searching for truth in a world ruled by fear and superstition. Raised by a strict vampire hunter, Carlisle spent his human life believing monsters were evil-until he became one himself. After his transformation, he struggles against his own nature, refusing to become the creature he was taught to hate. His journey takes him from isolation and despair to encounters with Alistair and the powerful Volturi, where he discovers the dark world of immortals and the life he does not want to live. Leaving them behind, Carlisle begins the centuries-long journey of choosing mercy over instinct, eventually finding his purpose as a doctor and dedicating his eternal life to saving the very humans he once feared he would destroy.

A tale of intergenerational BIID over centuries. In prep school I became a close friend of Brian Meadows. His mobility impairment was obvious. Over time its cause became evident as he described a peculiar turn of mind shared by generations of privileged ancestors whose story reaches back well into 18th century France. This is a work of fiction. Any resemblance to persons or situations other than those that are clearly general knowledge is pure coincidence. The story is excerpted and adapted from my much longer novel "Buddies." I hope you will enjoy reading it as much as I have writing it.

Lexus Karpi was always running, whether to something or from something. It was why she liked exploring; she could run around her whole island and never have to take a rest. Her brother, who she loved deeply, went farther, and made a career out of sailing across the isles. She aspired to sail with him one day, but unfortunately that day would never come. The Queen came to her island, said he died for reasons unknown, and handed her a letter. The first thing she wanted to do was run, and she did for a while, but you can only get so far on an island. Oakley Henceworth felt his whole life that something about him was off. He couldn't say the things others put into words so easily, he couldn't feel the things others described so wonderfully, and he just couldn't let himself be in love. His parents hammered into his brain that he was to stay quiet, stay mindful, never question anything. Asking only lead to arguing, so instead of learning about himself, Oakley just stayed quiet, stayed mindful, and stayed... confused. Finally, he couldn't take it anymore, so he left his parents, and lived with his friend Lex. It was only when they were out of his life that he could really come to understand himself. Taum Cantalo knew he had dreams. They were big, but they were never going to happen. His grandmother was gravely sick, so he had to take care of her. His father had him cleaning the house everyday, and his girlfriend demanded his attention. It felt like the entire world was against him, and he soon found out that it really was.
