The only character who stays close to the real person is Richey. I personally believe in a branch of String Theory (and quantum physics) known as the Many-Worlds Interpretation. It suggests that every time you make a choice, the Universe splits. All of these versions exist simultaneously, like pages in a book. You can only read one at a time, but in the endless library, every version of your life is already written.
