500-word story for the December 26, 2025 weekend write-in prompt - cheer

I wrote this short story for the National Geographic #PlanetOrPlastic writing contest. My story is written in the format of a epistolary - a series of letters. It follows five people's correspondence to friends and relatives throughout the history of modern plastics use, from the 1946 National Plastics Expo to a time in the near future when plastic and other types of pollution and debris threaten to destroy the Earth's oceans and throw awry the balance of gases in the atmosphere, temperature and weather patterns, and varied marine species' food chains, to a point where there is no chance to turn back. I hope you enjoy my story and that it inspires you to rethink your role in protecting our Earth and its indispensable marine habitats!

The said deluge that carried his most abysmal fear, made reality crash what was left of his doomed heart, and the lack of colors on his stage only confirmed what that helpless criminal had just told him." Instead of a prompt, this assignment came with a set of two pictures. One of an interesting graveyard with an angel statue in the center, or one of a lock and key. Of course, I chose the graveyard. Now, I did get a little lazy with this one (partially because I was sore over losing Mr Bumble from my draft), and I reused the characters from my first assignment, expanding them more as at the time I was considering writing a story based on the scenario. 26 people are chosen at random for each letter of the alphabet according to the first letter of their first name. For each round, three letters are pulled out of a bowl, and the three people must complete a gruesome and daunting task. If someone in that group completes the task, they live. If nobody completes the task within a certain time frame, one of the Chosens for the round dies and the other two are tortured. Everybody's life and sanity is at risk.
