Every story has a beginning. Ours began with a cancelation of a much-beloved television series. A long, long time ago and in the distant and mysterious era known as the 1990s, a remarkable science-fiction series called Space: Above and Beyond burst onto screens. It was smart, gritty. and exciting. And then, just as it was finding its wings, it was cancelled. You can imagine that the fans were not amused.
Across the world, squadrons of devoted fans emerged from the void, determined to keep the spirit of the series alive. Among them was a small but enthusiastic (read: obsessed) group from Malaysia, operating under the banner of the 88th Squadron, 'the Firebirds.' http://www1.sarawak.com.my/org/firebirds/
Officially, the Firebirds are the Malaysian branch of the 59th Ready Reserve Squadron, a collection of fans united by a common mission: to remind the universe that some stories deserve a second chance.
Unfortunately, it remained cancelled.
Being the enthusiastic, and admittedly obsessive fans that we were, we eventually decided that simply talking about our favorite series wasn't enough. We needed to do a fan fiction. Thus, this novel (for want of a better term) came into being. What follows is our humble attempt to chronicle the exploits of the 88th Squadron as they carve out their own corner within the Space: Above and Beyond universe. More accurately, it is a the collection and contributions derived from Firebirds of all the tall tales and questionable decisions pieced together from countless emails, chat sessions, forum posts, and fictional mission reports.
So strap in. Run your pre-flight checks. Ignore the warning lights (they've been blinking for years), and prepare to join the 88th Firebirds as they go through their mission to prove that some squadrons never stand down, some legends never fade, and some television cancellations should never be forgiven.
