Maria grew up confined to three rooms in the basement of her house: her bedroom, the hallway, and the bathroom. These rooms had no windows, so she never saw the outside world. She had little food, just enough to survive, and never had the opportunity to go to school, leaving her illiterate. When days passed without anyone coming down, Maria felt like she might die.
