In the aftermath of Adam Smasher's near-fatal defeat at the hands of V, Yorinobu Arasaka concludes that his oldest weapon is showing signs of obsolescence. A new generation of cyberware is commissioned; experimental, volatile, and designed to push beyond the limits of what the human body can endure. But the procedure carries a high risk of fatality, so a test subject is required before it can be safely installed in Smasher himself. Helena, a sharp and capable counter-intelligence operative, is selected among several candidates under the guise of a standard implant upgrade. She accepts, unaware she is volunteering for a procedure with a near-certain mortality rate. Her body is entirely replaced. Her memories are erased. A prototype Sandevistan (infused with a rogue AI from beyond the Blackwall and capable of simultaneous hacking and time dilation) is fused to her nervous system. Against all odds, she survives. The project, designated Athena, gives her a new name and a new purpose. Now a ghost of her former self, she is introduced to Smasher as his new partner. Bound by duty and a shared language of violence, the two deadliest assets in Arasaka's arsenal are forced into each other's orbit. What grows between them is something neither expected: trust earned through bloodshed, a quiet understanding that requires no words, and the rare comfort of standing beside someone who operates on the same frequency. Two weapons, forged in blood and chrome, who find in each other the only presence that feels like home.
