The hero of the story lost his wife and kids to this illness, so he then dedicated himself to find a cure for this monster of a sickness. The cure was known as a myth but that didn't stop him. Eliott's Grandfather never told him the ending of the story because he wanted Eliott to imagine the ending for himself. That was the last story Eliott's Grandfather ever told him.
