Se centran en el mundo de las carreras clandestinas callejeras en Japón, y toda la acción se concentra en pasajes montañosos donde se utiliza particularmente el estilo de conducción de derrape, denominado drift. La historia se desarrolla en la Prefectura de Gunma, Japón, específicamente en sus montes y los alrededores de las ciudades. Aunque los nombres de algunos lugares donde se desarrollan las carreras son de origen ficticio en principio en realidad no es así ya que se ha podido comprobar que todas las localidades que aparecen en la serie están basadas en sitios reales de la Prefactura de Gunma y están descritas y recreadas casi en su totalidad de detalles e incluso manteniendo sus nombres reales (excepto Akina, que en la realidad es la localidad de Haruna que a día de hoy está fusionada con la Ciudad de Takasaki).

Some of these people battle on the streets in their cars, regardless of legality. The two most popular forms of street motor sports is touge (mountain racing) and wangan (highway racing). Yutaro Watanabe (渡辺佑太朗) is an ordinary delivery boy for his dad's mochi business. Every other night, he drives up Mount Hideaway to the hotel at the top, and then back down. He has to be quick with his deliveries so the mochi doesn't go too warm, so he's built an unconventional way of driving fast. His best friend, Akua Enatsu (江夏青水) is an utaite singer, a trainer, and a very big car enthusiast. She's tried to get Yutaro into cars before, but he's constantly told her he knows what he need to know about cars-they take you places and they're well-engineered. Little do the two friends know what kind of 'secondary world' they'll suddenly immerse themselves in.

This takes place 1 year after the final race. This stage has more intense racing and has cars more powerful than ever. Many changes have been made and some have new cars that aren't completely different from what they were when the series left off. All the characters also gets new jobs and Project D reunites and finally, we get to know Bunta's backstory.
