They are to combat Kaltath, the dark being who, though locked away for many years, is rising from his imprisonment. If he succeeds, then the world will be wrought with elemental imbalance on a catastrophic level. Now, Ember must learn to control the fire that she fears or the people of the world she never wanted to harm will face the consequences of the powers that the Catalysts never should have had.
